2 States: Leaves you in dire straits
I have been very very late in coming up with the review of 2 States, infact I had kind of planned to not even review the movie after probably watching the day after the movie was released. But in the last two weeks I have been reading about the film doing brisk business and talks of the 100 crores mark and all that makes one evenly surprised.
To put the movie in a nutshell, it is long, tad boring and many a times one starts to feel how can a sub plot or a sub sub plot in a cinema become the mainstream topic. This makes for the plot drab and rubbery, to the point of even becoming tasteless. The original Chetan Bhagat book (frankly haven't read this one though) from where the plot is inspired, may have been more crisp (as Chetan is known for his sharp and crisp writing style) as it is a 268 page book only.
Replete with the Karan Johar signature stuff like punjabi weddings, mindless and needless songs and what else a mindless Arjun Kapoor. Alia as usual is charming in her self, but the plot pretty much bucks her down, the same is also the case with the oh so graceful Revathi too. Pity! we did not see much of her. Ronit and Amrita hold their space, but we do not really see the character of Ronit developing. He has been shown to be angry, depressed and generally pissed off with life from the first screen shot! Why? No explanations given! Wish they could have built on this character atleast, where almost every single character in the movie is known to be riding on the cliched and hackneyed Karan Johar (add in Sajid Nadiadwala too) emblem.
The movie could have been a little more digestable with a different star cast instead of Arjun who I seriously believe needs acting lessons, diction lessons and everything else that goes with the scope of cinema. From his Ishaqzaade days, he has been riding the wave (it is so unfortunate to observe that so many deserving people, die for that one break and the luck star kids ride on is unbelievable, unfortunate). Anyways! I guess we will have to linger on with the baggage!
Moments in the film that stand out? Pity, I cannot think of any, starting from IIM-A days of the two leads, who seem to be in a state of permanent libido there, to the more mellower version of their working days, a la Yes Bank (Gosh! Karan would have made a killing on the endorsements here, otherwise Yes Bank and IIM-A, got me thinking!) to the endless wars between the two families. Nothing stands out. The only good part; the movie does not foretell on the typical South Indian cliches that most hindi cinema has been harping on. Thank god for that.
Music is average, but I guess unlike my taste, the same seems to have caught on. But I loved Chaandaniya! Well done K. Mohan and Yashita.
What else! Nothing! I am in Dire Straits after watching 2 States, probably go listen to "Money for Nothing" for all it is worth.
