Buno Haansh: If you have read the story, don't go

Like I said in the title, if you have the read the original, which I think came out in the last or last to last year, Sharodiya Shonkha, do not watch the film as it is a complete let down. But if you have not read the original by Samaresh Majumdar, the movie is worth a dekko. The way different characters starting from the protagonist Amal to the characters, Shohag, Rijula and even all sundry characters develop are no where close to the original. What further adds to the agony, the climax scene which has been altered keeping Dev's image into account, which is unfortunate.

The film to put it simply lacks the desired drama and the suspense, which if one has read the book will understand. It looks like a narration currently and there are moments where the film falls in a trap of trying to do justice to the book and the creative license it wants to use. Perhaps, this trap always remain when one tries to adapt a story or a classic novel into a cinema format. Some of the classic novels converted to cinema, starting from Devdas to Pather Panchali, have had such a dilemma, but it had the genius of Ray or talented Bimal Roy to handle. Pity, Anirudha the director fails miserably.

Deb is a complete let down, but I have never considered Deb beyond a Paglu or the assembly line of trash that he churns out. He is a misfit and the trauma, agony, dilemma and the hesitations of Amal never comes out in his character, his relationship with Shohag or with Rijula at different levels never really stands out. Infact, personally, both Shohag and Rijula's character were found wanting, particularly, Rijula. The only silver line, Amal's sister in law played by Sudipta, who is effortless and sublime as usual.

The music is not out of the world, but holds on, wish Shantanu Moitra could have invested a bit more and not be influenced by the music of Bong Connection. The movie covered several cities like Dhaka, Pune, Thailand, Mumbai and Kolkata of course. Pity, none of these cities stand out as a strong background in the plot, which otherwise could have added to the drama a bit more.

Pity! What could have been a brilliant crime noir, fell flat on the face. Bad screenplay, bad choice of actors, run of the mill music and a bland cinematography, all sounded the death knell for Buno Haansh! Thought it was for me at the end, a wild goose chase!
