Why should you watch Band Baaja Baaraat

Band Baaja Baaraat (BBB) released in 2010 and was the directorial debut of Maneesh Sharma and acting debut for the 1000000 mAh powerbank, Ranveer Singh. BBB was an out and out commercial release of YRF but in the façade of that, is an amazing narration of grit, belief, a sweet romance brewing and of course the two protagonist and the setting of the movie; saadi dilli. For one, the Delhi of BBB takes you by surprise. Quite similar to what Dibakar did with Khosla Ka Ghosla (KKG) and Shoojit with October and Vicky Donor. Delhi, as never seen before them. Remember when KKG came in the summer of 2006 it showcased the city we were not exposed to. Before KKG we had the usual templates like the Raisena Hills, India Gate and maybe some random Flyovers. KKG unleashed a different side. BBB takes off from there and showcases the very Panju Pritampura, Rohini et al. Later we do get a dekko of Sainik Farms too. But, BBB is brilliant as a film for a first time maker.

The credit for that goes to Ranveer Singh, who simply sizzles right from the first frame, where we are shown his sun kissed face to the tune of the song, Tarkeibein. He is powerhouse and knows when to amp the velocity button or tone it down. Sampler; he is best when he has been on a one night revelry with his "bizzness" partner Anushka Sharma (Shruti Kakkar). And the discomfort he has for the next few days in confronting her is amazing. He has, till then been the high on topterone and the typical Delhi lad who rides on a lot of energy (often taking it no where). But this sudden turn in his life puts him down. Ranveer is best in those moments. And then when the same guy has to snatch a deal from their lead competitor for a "Sainik Farm" marriage he is at his sublime best. Conversely, he is aggressive when he has to get work done or pep up the marriage. In all BBB is an out and out Ranveer Singh film. What a debut!

The second big lead is the city and the people. From the humble residents to the cityscape to the numerous dealers engaged in the marriage business (Neeraj Sood is brilliant in his part) to the Panju parents trying to marry off Shruti Kakkar; in all its a cultural potpourri of the city you will hate, or get amused or maybe even laugh and sometimes sneer. But, you cannot ignore the brash, loud, often peering into you and maybe invade into your privacy moments. Maneesh gets you to see Delhi in a way, perhaps he has seen it all growing. Like the other metros, Delhi has many pockets of sub-culture and BBB highlights one part of that. BBB should also be seen for discovering the city in a new way and the people around.

Anushka chips in with a performance that complements the energy of Ranveer so well. Theirs's a chemistry which works and helps to lift the scenes quite well. Their love, hate and respect works well for the plot and so does highlights the scenes too. Her undivided passion is only complemented by Bittoo Sharma's (Ranveer's screenname) energy to help her set up the business. This was only her second outing in films and she pulls it off well after the very subdued role in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Salim-Suleiman music adds to the crescendo and so does the brilliant cinematography and art of the films. But the one guy who should get credit for the film is Habib Faisal (Do Dooni Chaar fame) and BBB's director Maneesh Sharma gives him full credit to lift the film from where it was to an extremely fresh, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable affair.

BBB is on Amazon Prime. Go watch!
