Rowdy Rathore- Being Rowdy Seems COOL

Rowdy-ness is in and it is cool. Full on time pass and total paisa vasool. It is a non-stop entertainment from the moment Akshay enters the screen with Paresh Ganatra. Loads of comedy, action and a crisp screenplay. There is a never dull moment and the rapid pace of the film perhaps makes up for it's loose ends here and there. Watching these movies without any baggage is perhaps best. Prabhudeva has improved from his last outing Wanted immensely and that gets reflected in every frame of the film.
Akshay excels in both comedy and action, with his double role, Sonakshi does not have to do much, just cavort and pirouette around Akshay and she does that ably. I hope nobody tells her to "act" in her future films. She has never let gone her Dabangg baggage and that it is clear frame after frame. Nassar is always the classical villain and movie after movie he has been doing it with aplomb.
The music stands out and Prabhudeva's trademark dance routine with celebrities like Vijay and Kareena Kapoor are ably reflected in the already popular number, Chinta Ta Ta Chita Chita.
The story is the classic hackneyed pot boiler that has been churned out from Hindi Film Industry since Vijay (angry young man) realised that he has been the much maligned and exploited man of the moment. Yet Rowdy provides a freshness in looking act things. Could be action, the dialogues (don't agree me!), or perhaps the fast pace of the film. There is a never a dull moment.
Scenes that stand out, Akshay Axe effect with the lad cop is a great take on humour and his action sequences, particularly the one just before interval, truly gritty, greasily and gaudy. Special mention for the film's promotion posters. Truly stands out.  
Special mention for the cinematography and special effects. One of the finest aspects of the industry, offlate, the tremendous improvements made in technical finesse over the years. The dusty township of Hampi and other locales stands out (even though the crew ran into some problems while filming) through great camera work.
So, if you are hassled, tense, exploited, depressed this weekend, then head for, Chinta Ta Ta Chita Chita. One single dose and it is sorted.

Coming back to writing a piece after a very long time. I think about 3 months. Unfortunately, there was not a single film worth mention that released between now and September that is worth a shot. For that matter there is nothing in 2013 that is actually worth a mention.   Cinema is a medium to convey a message; message which are verbal or visual based. It has the power to alter narrative or perhaps the discourse too. In the 50's 60's and even more pronounced in the 70's and 80's film stars commanded a huge influence on the audience. Hair style, clothes and accessories were copied by audience blindly. The Sadhana Cut became a famous hairstyle or the bouffant of Asha Parekh or the Sharmila Tagore style eye liners; even the men folk were not left behind. The ear hiding hairstyle of Amitabh Bachchan or the bell bottom or the unbuttoned shirt (only the first 2-3 buttons) went on to be cult classics. But, this rage was/is actually a global phenomena. Buno Haansh: If you have read the story, don't go

Like I said in the title, if you have the read the original, which I think came out in the last or last to last year, Sharodiya Shonkha, do not watch the film as it is a complete let down. But if you have not read the original by Samaresh Majumdar, the movie is worth a dekko. The way different characters starting from the protagonist Amal to the characters, Shohag, Rijula and even all sundry characters develop are no where close to the original. What further adds to the agony, the climax scene which has been altered keeping Dev's image into account, which is unfortunate. The film to put it simply lacks the desired drama and the suspense, which if one has read the book will understand. It looks like a narration currently and there are moments where the film falls in a trap of trying to do justice to the book and the creative license it wants to use.
