Vicky Donor- A huge surprise

I know I am late, but I saw this surprise package late. But, GOD I saw it, which is important. This has to be the biggest and the best sleeper hit of the year.
The movie belongs to Anu Kapoor, Anu Kapoor, Anu Kapoor and Aayushman. Remember the Editor's role in Mr. India (Anu Kapoor at his delectable best). He doesn't fail. On top form, with crisp acting and never really goes out of the character at any point in time. Hat's off to Shoojit, this has to be the biggest find (what was Anu Kapoor doing all these years, perhaps preparing for this one role). Aaayushman the boisterous and loud Punjabi Munda, stands out. What a debut! You have to give it to him.
However, above all this what stands out, in it's true character, DELHI. Loud, Crass, Pompous, Flashy, Unforgiving, yet providing space to all. It has to be Delhi at it's best. We have had quite a few films where the protagonist or the antagonist is Delhi, this one captures another hue of the city. The classic Punjabi refugee colony (Lajpat Nagar) versus the Bengali refugee colony (C.R. Park). One has to be a Delhi-ite or has stayed in Delhi for long to understand the understated and often on the fringe cultural differences. That is where Shoojit stands out.
What else, the classic Mrs. Arora and Biji! Their debates, their conflicts, their moments of ethos and pathos (over drinks) and perhaps the "spirit" of Delhi (now this is new, we all had heard of the never die-ing spirit of Mumbai) that gets best captured through these two headstrong and suffragette characters.
I had expected a little more in charaterisation from Yami and her Pishi (imagine the Dog versus Cat scenario) and her father too. But they stand out, especially, Pishi (something of revelation). Usually most bengali houses have an unwed Pishi (Bua) or a unwed Kaka (Chacha/Chachu). That is amazingly observed and captured by Shoojit.
A word on the script by Juhi, simply put remarkable. She must have spent (rather invested) time on the subtle and minute observations that gets to stand out, which makes Vicky Donor such an enjoyable flick to see. Music is top rated, Rum Whiskey is already on the chart, Aayushman is amazing with Paani Da Raang and so is Rokda.
Best scenes, the drunken conversations of Biji and Mrs. Arora, Dr. Baldev's explanation to Vicky about Alexander's journey to India and the classic Punjabi-Bong wedding.
Hat's off to Shoojit, Juhi and it has to be John (Abraham) or kaun! Keep the good times rolling John, we love you more as a producer!
